Concrete Pool Decks
Beautiful, slip-resistant pool surrounds that enhance safety and create the perfect outdoor retreat.

Why Concrete is Perfect for Pool Decks
Your pool deck serves multiple important functions. It provides a safe walking surface around the pool, offers space for lounging and entertaining, and defines the look of your entire pool area. Concrete is the most popular pool deck material because it checks all the boxes for functionality, durability, and design flexibility. Concrete handles the challenges of pool environments better than most other materials. It resists water damage, does not warp or rot, and stays cooler than many alternatives.
Safety is the top priority for any pool deck. Concrete can be textured or finished to provide excellent slip resistance even when wet. This is critical around pools where people are barefoot and surfaces stay wet for hours. Properly installed concrete also drains well, moving water away from the pool area rather than allowing puddles that create slip hazards. The solid surface eliminates trip hazards from loose pavers or shifting deck boards.
Design possibilities with concrete are nearly endless. You can create simple, classic pool decks with a clean look or go with elaborate decorative finishes. Stamped concrete can mimic expensive stone, slate, or tile at a fraction of the cost. Color options let you coordinate your deck with your home and landscape. Different areas can have different textures or patterns. You might use smooth concrete for lounge areas and textured surfaces near the pool edge for maximum traction. Whatever vision you have for your pool area, concrete can bring it to life.
Pool Deck Design Considerations
Size and Layout
The ideal pool deck size depends on how you plan to use the space. At minimum, you need 4 to 5 feet of deck around the pool perimeter for safe walking and pool maintenance access. Most pool owners want significantly more space for lounge chairs, tables, and entertaining. A deck 8 to 12 feet wide on at least one side provides room for furniture and activities. Consider your lot size, budget, and intended use when planning deck dimensions.
The layout should create natural traffic patterns. You want clear paths from the house to the pool and around the pool perimeter. Wider areas near doors or gates accommodate traffic bottlenecks. Some homeowners include separate zones like a dining area away from the pool edge or a sunbathing area with maximum sun exposure. We help you design a layout that makes sense for your property and lifestyle.
Drainage and Slope
Proper drainage prevents water from pooling on your deck or flowing back into the pool. We slope pool decks away from the pool at about 1/4 inch per foot. This subtle slope is unnoticeable when walking but effectively moves water off the deck. The slope must also direct water away from your house and any structures. In some cases, we install deck drains at low points to collect and channel water away.
Good drainage is not just about comfort. It also affects safety and deck longevity. Standing water creates slip hazards and breeding areas for mosquitoes. Water that freezes on your deck in fall and spring can damage the concrete surface. Proper grading and drainage prevent these problems and keep your deck looking good and functioning safely.
Surface Texture and Finish
Choosing the right surface finish balances slip resistance, comfort, and appearance. Basic broom finishes provide good traction but can feel rough on bare feet. Brushed or lightly textured finishes offer slip resistance while being more comfortable. Salt finish or light sandblasting creates texture that works well. Stamped concrete can provide both visual interest and slip resistance depending on the pattern chosen.
Avoid overly smooth finishes like hard trowel finishes around pools. These become dangerously slippery when wet. Also avoid extremely rough textures that are uncomfortable for bare feet. The ideal pool deck finish keeps people safe without being harsh on feet. We can show you sample finishes and recommend options appropriate for your needs.
Additional Features
Your pool deck can include various integrated features:
- Colored or stained concrete for visual appeal
- Borders in contrasting colors or patterns
- Built-in planters or garden beds
- Fire pit areas for evening enjoyment
- Extended patio areas connecting to the pool deck
- Privacy walls or decorative screening
- Steps and seating integrated into the design
These features transform a basic pool deck into a complete outdoor living space. We work with your ideas and budget to create a pool area that serves your needs and exceeds your expectations.
Our Pool Deck Installation Process
Planning and Preparation
Pool deck installation starts with careful planning. We meet with you to discuss your vision for the space. How do you want to use your pool area? What style appeals to you? What is your budget? We take measurements and evaluate site conditions including drainage, sun exposure, and access for equipment. If you are installing the pool and deck together, we coordinate timing with the pool contractor. For existing pools, we work around the pool and any established landscaping.
We provide design sketches or layouts showing the proposed deck with dimensions and features. This helps you visualize the finished project and make decisions about size, shape, and finish options. We also provide a detailed written estimate covering all aspects of the work. Once you approve the plan, we schedule the project for a time that works with your schedule and weather conditions.
Excavation and Base Work
We excavate the pool deck area to allow for a gravel base and the concrete slab. The excavation depth depends on your existing grade and the finished height we need to achieve. All organic material, roots, and debris are removed. We then install 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone base. This base provides drainage and a stable foundation for the concrete. The stone is carefully graded to establish proper slopes for drainage and then compacted thoroughly with mechanical equipment.
Forms are set to define the deck edges and establish finish heights. For pool decks, accurate forming is critical to achieve the correct slopes and heights. We double-check all measurements and levels before proceeding. Any reinforcement like wire mesh or rebar is installed according to specifications. For larger decks, control joints are planned to divide the deck into manageable sections and control where cracks might occur.
Concrete Placement and Finishing
Concrete is delivered and placed within the forms. Pool decks typically use 4 to 5 inches of concrete, slightly thicker than standard sidewalks. We screed the surface to the proper levels and slopes. Float work smooths the surface and brings cream to the top. The finish work depends on your chosen surface. For textured finishes, we apply them while the concrete is still workable. Stamping must be done within a specific time window when the concrete is firm enough to hold patterns but soft enough to accept the stamps.
Color can be added through integral color mixed into the concrete or through surface-applied stains and dyes. Borders or accent areas in different colors are created using carefully placed dividers. After finishing, we apply curing compound to help the concrete gain strength properly. The deck must be protected from traffic and weather for several days while it cures. Most pool decks can handle foot traffic after 3 to 5 days but should not have heavy furniture or loads for at least a week.
Sealing and Final Details
Once the concrete has fully cured, we recommend applying a quality sealer. Sealer protects the concrete from water penetration, staining, and chemical damage from pool chlorine. It also enhances the appearance of colored or stamped concrete. We remove all forms and clean up the work area. Soil along deck edges is replaced and graded to blend with the new deck. Any disturbed landscaping is restored. The result is a beautiful, functional pool deck ready for years of enjoyment. We provide care instructions including resealing recommendations to keep your deck looking great.
